I brought my dog in as a new client because she was having sneezing fits and copious amounts of snot rockets out of only her right nostril. A quick Google said a possibility of dental problems. As we discussed her symptoms, the Dr immediately mentioned allergies. Fair, but no. She's seven, she's never had allergy problems and it just didn't read like any situation of allergies I've ever seen. When I stated I felt it was a dental issue, it was brushed off and he said her teeth looked fine. He was standing leaning against the counter and at no point in front of me did he examine her teeth, neither did the assistant sitting on the floor next to her. My other thought was a sinus infection because of the look and consistency of the snot, which looked kind of infectiony. We discussed the possibility of needing antibiotics, in case the allergy was a misdiagnosis. The Dr. agreed if the Claritin didn't work we could try a round of antibiotics and I could just call for them and pick them up And we'd figure things out from there. That night, we were playing and she was on her back with her mouth wide open and I could finally see that one of her teeth, on her right way in the back had massive swelling and was extremely irritated. I called the next morning, explained what I saw, and that he agreed we could just call for antibiotics if it wasn't allergies. She put me on hold to check with the doctor and came back and said something to the order of "well it wasn't like that yesterday." I simply repeated that we had agreed that if it wasn't allergies I could call for antibiotics, and that's what I'm doing. Straight to the end of the story, I took her to another vet, they did a full examination and not only did she have to have a tooth extracted but she also has a fast-growing osteosarcoma tumor in the majority of the roof of her mouth and into her sinus cavity. She only has a couple weeks to live. With your gut feeling, you are your dog's advocate
